Mobile app development is a hot field right now because more people are finding that apps are useful tools to market their business, earn income, and help their customers. Once you have decided to build a mobile app, you’re probably searching online for the best options and finding an extensive list for hiring app developers. How do you choose?
Here are some considerations to help you narrow down the field:
How much development does your app need?
Some app companies rely on templates, churning out apps quickly and cheaply. If you need a simple app, that is a good option. You can choose from several templates and a few designs.
However, if you need a lot of advanced features or you want an enterprise-level app, consider speaking to mobile app companies who build custom. Companies who build mobile apps offer a higher quality of work, meaning cleaner code that works smoothly, plus better overall design and user interface. Your app will also undergo rigorous testing before launch. Plus, a custom app is designed specifically around your idea and your audience, which leads to higher use rates.
If your company is relying on this app to provide customer service, e-commerce, or drive part of your business, avoid using a one-person company. That’s not to say we don’t support freelancers, but we don’t recommend risking your mid-to-large sized business on one for this project and here’s why:
- He or she may be a strong coder, but might not offer expertise in the areas of design and user interface.
- He or she may have several projects at once and struggle to meet your deadlines.
- He or she probably doesn’t offer post-launch support.
- They may not have insurance, as a mobile app development company does.
Is your app for iOS or Android or both?
Some mobile app companies only develop apps for one operating system: either Android or iOS. Other companies offer both. Make sure you talk to the team about their skill set with these operating systems. Check to see if the team has credentials or certifications. You want to know that they adhere to the best coding practices.
Check out their apps and experience
Ask about other apps the company has built. Do they have a lot of experience? Download them and click around. Does it work well? Does the design make sense? Do you like it? By “kicking the tires,” so to speak, you can get a sense of their style. If you later choose that mobile app company, you can use their previous work as examples for features you like or dislike.
Can you work with them?
Your mobile app development team is your partner. Of course, you expect them to produce software that operates as expected, but a good mobile app developer is also going to offer ideas to make your app even better for the customer or make it more likely to earn revenue. Meet or speak with their project manager or point person to get a sense of the company and what it will be like to coordinate your project. Ask about the process. Can you see yourself working with them? Communication is critical when creating something; does your discussion with the team feel smooth? Do you think they have a good understanding of your needs and goals?
Reach out to the owners of apps built by a company you are considering. Ask them what it was like to work with the company. Find out what they liked, didn’t like. Did the company produce the expected result? Was it completed on time and budget? Did they offer something to the project that was incredibly helpful?
You get what you pay for.
The competition among mobile app developers can be fierce. If someone sounds too good to be true, he or she is probably over-promising to secure your business. He or she might rely on templates or provide you with a white label option instead of a custom app for your company. Cheapest isn’t always best, but neither is the most expensive. A quality mobile app developer is going to offer specifics on how they will work with you, how they will execute the work. They will also ask detailed questions about your needs. Speak to a few companies and make sure you’re comfortable with both the price and their professionalism.
