8 New Year’s Resolutions for Digital Marketers

Everyone needs to make resolutions for the New Year, and digital marketers are no exception. New Year’s resolutions help us to feel better about where we’ve come from and to more deeply understand where we’re going.

This tradition of making promises for what’s to come has been around for nearly as long as history itself, dating back at least three thousand years to ancient Babylonia where people would make promises to their deities be better throughout the coming year.  Knights of the middle ages were known to promise their fealty to their people through Peacock Vows at the end of the year. We of course tend to make promises about fitness or money, which are no less noble if you think about it.

There’s a reason that New Year’s resolutions are so widely popular throughout the ages. The New Year is a great chance to get things going, to make things happen. We can create our own destiny in the New Year – you can create your own success.

2017 Resolutions for Digital Marketers

Digital marketers can benefit from taking stock and reflecting on where they want to focus in 2017. Going into the New Year with a clear head and an ambitious outlook can make all the difference for your success or failure in the realm of digital marketing.

Here are eight New Year’s resolutions for marketers that will hopefully help you to feel better about where you’re going and about how you’re going to get there in 2017.

This year I promise to:

1)           Identify where I am and where I want my business to be.

This involves creating a marketing campaign and goals to go along with it. It all starts with a clear vision, which is a needed goal for any person who is pushing for success in any arena. Make your goals better this year, creating specific, measurable pieces for you to accomplish this year. The more detailed you are about where you want to go and what you want to do, the more likely you are to get there.

 

2)           Create engaging content

Of course we all want to create engaging content, but it’s easy to phone it in. This year, resolve to take your content to the next level and beyond as you push for something bigger in 2017. What are the areas of content that you could be exploring but aren’t yet? What presentation opportunities are you missing? Make 2017 your year of content.

 

3)           Redefine my position as a leader/expert in my field

Quality work is what leads to expert status. This year, resolve to create the kind of high quality work that sets you apart from the rest of the crowd. Put yourself out there in 2017 and own your status as an expert. So often we sell ourselves short when it comes to selling ourselves. Don’t do that this year – own the fact that you’ve got this and that people look up to you.

 

4)           Provide value for influencers

The goal here is to have customers/people come back to engage with you and ask your advice. This year isn’t the time for you to sit back, it’s the time for you to improve the value that you’re providing. The more that you’re able to offer your customers value, the more likely they are to spread the word.

 

Your target in 2017 is the people who talk, the people who are sharing ideas. You want to influence the influencers and so expand your ability to reach a wide variety of markets this year. That will undoubtedly involve more research and expanding your skillset, but it’s well worth it.

 

5)           Gain a deeper understanding of audience personalities.

Don’t just assume that you know your market in 2017, go out there and do the research to find out who they are. The more that you learn about your audience, the more you’ll be able to give them what they want. Expand your research abilities in 2017 so that you’re able to find out more about what your audience is looking for, then go give it to them!

 

6)           Add a new medium to my media

Whatever you’re already doing as far as media, take it to the next level in 2017. This could come in a wide variety of forms depending on what you’re already doing, but a few ideas are to add video, to create a blog, to join Instagram, to start a podcast, etc. Whatever you’ve already been doing in terms of digital marketing, expand on it in 2017. Expand your reach dramatically by doing more with your content marketing this year.

 

7)           Confer with peers

Digital marketers can easily get caught in the trap of sitting in front of their computers all day. That’s not where you want to be, and it can cause you to stagnate. This year, resolve to go out and connect with other digital marketers to expand and raise your understanding of the world of digital marketing. Attend mastermind groups, go to workshops, take part in conferences as this year progresses. Right now, in January, make a list of places that you want to go and things that you want to do to improve your marketing this year. Then put them on your calendar and go do them! Resolve to be inspired in 2017!

8)           Have a positive outlook

This one might seem like it’s a bit of a generic New Year’s resolution, but it’s never a bad idea. The more positive and open you are in your life, the more people will be drawn to you and your ideas. 2016 was tumultuous, and 2017 is likely to continue that trend. In order to create the success that you want to have this year, be positive about it. Taking positivity into the New Year will help you to create the digital marketing success that you’re craving – people are inspired by fresh, positive energy. Give it to them, and to yourself this year.
